Other factors must also be considered, such as the amount of RAM and available hard disk space. Internet Explorer 8 is the last version compatible with Windows XP. You must upgrade to a newer version of Windows in order to use more recent versions of Internet Explorer.

System Requirements

There is no Service Pack requirement for the 64-bit version. 64 MB of RAM is the minimum requirement for the 32-bit version, while the 64-bit version demands at least 128 MB. 150 MB and 200 MB of free hard disk space must be available for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, respectively.

  • The installation source files for the Windows XP version of Internet Explorer 8 are different than for other versions of Windows. Browse to and search for "Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP" or "Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition." Click the "Download" button and select the option to run or open the file. Follow the instructions to complete the installation of Internet Explorer 8.

  • Microsoft states that Internet Explorer 8 is faster than previous versions. Common tasks are streamlined so that they require fewer steps to accomplish. Enhancements to the privacy controls help protect personal information while surfing the web. The updated security model provides more protection against common threats, such as imposter websites and malicious code.

Internet Explorer 9

  • Internet Explorer 9 is the first version of the Microsoft web browser not supported on Windows XP. It is included with Windows 7 and available for Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 or higher. It requires a minimum of 512 MB of RAM, but only 70 to 120 MB of available hard disk space, which is less than Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP.
