Subway is a restaurant chain that specializes in submarine sandwiches. With restaurants in more than 90 countries, Subway is one of the largest fast food franchises in the world. According the Subway Student and Educator Resource Guide, Subway's simplistic design enables the company to open restaurants in locations where competing restaurants cannot fit, such as supermarkets and hospitals.
Seventeen-year-old Fred DeLuca founded Subway in 1965 with financial aid from Dr. Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist. DeLuca was searching for a way to raise enough money for college tuition; in the process, he created a restaurant called Pete's Super Submarines, which operated in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Brian Dixon, an acquaintance of DeLuca, opened the first franchised Subway store in Wallingford, Connecticut, in 1974.
Doctor's Associates Inc. owns the Subway franchise. The company is privately held, so stocks cannot be bought. Although Milford, Connecticut, serves as the company's headquarters, regional offices operate around the world, providing jobs for roughly 1,000 people. According to Yahoo! Finance, Fred DeLuca is the president of the company, David Worroll is the controller and Bill Schettini is the chief marketing officer.
Jared Fogle became a spokesman for Subway restaurants after losing 245 lbs. during a Subway diet. His daily meals consisted of a 6-inch turkey sub and a 12-inch vegetarian sub. In addition to the diet, Fogle began and maintained a regular walking routine. In 2000, he appeared in various Subway commercials, sharing his weight-loss story with the world. In 2006, Fogle created The Jared Foundation, which seeks to educate families on the dangers of child obesity.
Customers can customize their sandwiches at Subway restaurants. According to the official Subway website, you can devise more than 2 million combinations from the choices on the menu. The website reports that, collectively, Subway restaurants in the U.S. serve almost 2,800 sandwiches and salads every minute.
Subway interacts with organizations such as the American Red Cross, United Way, Habitat for Humanity and the American Heart Association. Many of the franchise stores also donate money and products to support local community organizations and efforts.
