When considering costumes for three 11-year-old girls, the decision concerning what to wear begins with the girls' preferences. Take note of each girl's interests and personal style. Keep preteen costumes modest, yet be aware that 11-year-olds won't want to wear anything they perceive as babyish. Help each girl suit up in a costume that delights her and complements the costumes worn by her two companions.
Three 11year-old girls can dress as preteens of a bygone era. With fabric glue, attach pink pom-poms in the shape of poodles to the front of three different-colored, knee-length flared skirts. Give each girl a white blouse and a silk scarf to tie around her neck. Sweep each girl's hair into a high ponytail. If a girl's hair is too short for a ponytail, pin up one side of her hair in a pretty barrette. Let the girls apply cherry-red lipstick. Any flat shoe will do for a doo-wop costume, but make sure each girl wears bobby socks to complete the look.
Dress the girls in rock-star costumes. Let the girls wear bright-colored pants and shiny shirts --- the flashier the better. If the girls' closets are lacking flashy duds, take all three girls thrift-store shopping to find the rock-star-worthy clothes. Buy shocking-colored synthetic wigs from a costume shop and get all the girls matching sunglasses. Buy toy microphones from the dollar store for the girls to carry.
Give the girls the option to dress in costumes befitting sophisticated princesses. Let each girl wear her fanciest dress -- a junior bridesmaid gown or party or pageant dress. Buy matching bejeweled plastic crowns where toys are sold, or spring for pricier metal crowns in a mall accessory shop. Place the crowns on the girls' heads after they all have been to the salon for a royal-looking hairstyle, something upswept and curly. Complete the look with white tights and black shoes.
Help three 11-year-old girls dress as themselves from the future. Have a conference with the girls to determine what each young lady would like to do for her occupation when she finishes school. Once the girls decide on a chosen field, help each one find components for a costume to dress as a woman in the occupation. Use long, white men's shirts, unbuttoned, as lab coats for various medical professions. Make a name tag to pin to the lab coat. Obtain a well-fitting suit and sensible pumps, with a U.S. flag to carry, for a girl who would be senator or president.
