Factors
-
When choosing a haircut for boys, you may want to consider the type of hair that he has -- such as coarse or fine, straight or curly. Certain styles will suit specific hair types. A child who loves sports or enjoys an active lifestyle may need a haircut that accommodates the activity. Other factors to consider involve the amount of time needed to maintain the style, the age of the child and the time of year. Colder months as in fall or winter call for longer hair and hot summer months call for shorter hair.
Crew Cut
-
Often called the crew cut, the hair is cut short in the front, sides and back of the head. A very short crew cut is also called a military haircut or buzz cut. Crew cuts are easy to cut and maintain. It can be washed quickly and almost no blow drying is required as it tends to dry faster than longer haircuts. Boys involved in sports or an active lifestyle will find this haircut ideal as it stays out of the eyes -- and because of its short length it will not get tangle up in any rough play or activity.

Longer Haircuts
-
For boys who prefer longer hair the comb down, shag or side swept haircut are good options. These styles work well for older boys and in the colder months when longer hair can help protect against cold on the head and neck. With the comb down haircut the hair is cut just above the eyebrows and allowed to fall from the scalp toward the eyes. The sides and back of the hair are also left a little longer than a crew cut. This style will still work for active boys as the hair is cut above the eyes. A side swept haircut involves cutting the hair either to the right or left of the center line of the scalp. The hair is then swept either to the right or left according to the preference of the child. A side swept cut that is layered to create a controlled casual look, and is less formal than the side swept, is called a shag or shaggy cut. This style doesn't require a lot of maintenance other than regular brushing.
Other Considerations
-
Some boys like a little mojo to their haircuts. With some help from hair styling products and hairdryer, any haircut can be styled to achieve a more sophisticated look. Crew cuts can be spiked, either all over or in certain areas. Longer haircuts can be styled with gel or mousse to achieve a more suave look for formal occasions or special events. For boys with curly hair, you may want to consider a slightly longer haircut to allow the weight of the longer length to reduce some of the curl.
