Help the person turning 50 to laugh at himself with gag gifts.

Turning 50 years old is a major milestone in one's life. While some will embrace turning 50, others dread it like the plague as the turning point from being middle-aged to being old. For the person fretting over turning 50, give him funny gag gifts that tease him about getting old in a good-natured way.

  1. 50th Oldie Gift Baskets

    • Present the person turning 50 with a gift basket full of items for the elderly. A funny gift basket will include a fake pair of dentures and denture cream, extra-thick glasses, a large-print book, fiber powder drink mix, arthritis cream and a bottle of prune juice. Another kit for women is a hot flash kit, to tease a woman about going through "the change." This basket is filled with both a hand-held fan and a battery-operated mini-fan, mood-stabilizing "pills," which are actually colorful, candy-coated chocolate in an old prescription bottle, large ice-packs and a T-shirt with a funny saying on it such as, "Hot Flash in Progress. Outta My Way!" or "Danger, May Hot Flash at Any Moment!"

    Oldie Signs and Certificates

    • For someone turning 50, a funny gift they can hang up in their home is an "Official Oldie" certificate, stating that his best years are behind him. You can also give him a funny caution sign that cautions that the new 50-year-old "may try to act young in a desperate attempt to hang on to his youth." Other sayings for the sign include, "caution, senior moment in progress," and "caution, may put you to sleep with endless stories of his youth." Another idea is a small card made to look like a business card that says, "Official Member of the Oldie Club."

    Magazines and Books

    • Present him with a stack of AARP magazines wrapped with a bow and a subscription sign-up card on top. Another idea is a set of large-print books complete with a magnifying glass. Also a book about aging gracefully or the "joys" of getting older is humorous idea. Another gift idea is to give him a catalog of enrichment classes to take that are geared toward older people. Circle the ones that an older person may enjoy, such as a knitting class or shuffleboard lessons.

    Funny Sayings

    • Give the person turning 50 a T-shirt with a humorous saying on it related to getting old. One idea is, "I'm not 50! It's just the 20th Anniversary of my 30th Birthday!", or "I'm not 50! I'm 21 with 29 years of Experience!" Instead of T-shirts, another idea is to give the person a jar fully of 50 sayings such as these. The person can select one to read from the jar for each of the next 50 days.
