What Are My Options for Shipping an Animal?

Many options are available for pet owners when it comes to shipping their animals.

With advances in modern technology and transportation, nearly anything can be shipped to anywhere in the world with relative ease, and animals are no exception. Whether it's a pet that needs to be shipped, an exotic animal or a bunch of insects, there's usually a way to do it. Still, pets tend to have the greatest advantage when it comes to shipping options and costs, though many animals can often travel successfully in almost as many ways as their human counterparts.

  1. Planes

    • Many airlines offer services for pets or other animals. Still, restrictions abound on most airlines, with many refusing to take certain breeds of dogs or cats. Airlines also must keep in mind the destination of any flight containing animals, as they are subject to governmental restrictions of both the originating and destination countries. For example, flights into the United Kingdom, China, India and other nations cannot contain warm-blooded animals from another country, though cold-blooded animals are sometimes allowed.

    Ground Service

    • Animal owners considering shipping animals domestically, or at least within a certain landmass, may want to consider ground services like car and truck transport. Some companies that provide this service often deliver animals right to the recipient's door. Still, as with airplane shipping of animals, restrictions exist. For example, UPS will agree to ship many kinds of live animals, including fish, insects and reptiles. However, the company refuses to ship any endangered species or even any mammals. Other ground service companies, however, are designed specifically for transporting dogs and other warm-blooded animals.

    Trains

    • There are many disparities between train companies when it comes to shipping animals. Some trains will allow shipping of animals and most pets, particularly in Germany or other European countries where train travel is common. However, many train companies in the U.S. do not ship animals. A person interested in shipping animals by train should contact the particular train line to inquire about this often-restricted service.

    Boats

    • Another option for those looking to ship pets could be to use a boat. Many would-be shippers pass on this option because boats are often much slower than planes and are still subject to many of the same shipping restrictions as airlines. However, for those traveling with an animal, boats might be a scenic option. Few cruise lines offer animal shipping or services, but those that choose to charter a boat may have better luck.
