Learn about Catholicism together.

Catholic children start learning about their faith as early as second grade, when they get ready to receive their First Communion. Activities that allow children to interact with each other while learning about the Bible and the Catholic religion will help children remember the important teachings of the Catholic faith.

  1. Lent Activities

    • The 40 days that Catholics follow Lent is a time for Catholics to think about the resurrection of Jesus. Catholic children can participate in Lent activities, such as creating crosses out of palm branches, baking Easter cookies, drawing a picture of the item they are giving up for Lent and collecting food for people who have none. Lent is a traditional time for Catholics to donate to people in need, and children can participate in volunteer activities and talk about different ways to help others.

    The Annunciation

    • Hands-on activities for the Annunciation, which is when Mary found out that she would be the mother of Jesus, include creating images of angels, drawing pictures of Mary, acting out the Annunciation as a play and coloring or painting images of Mary and the angels. Children can also listen to the story of the Annunciation.

    Learning the Catholic Creeds

    • Fill-in-the-blank worksheets and coloring books are helpful when attempting to memorize Catholic Creeds. Children can make a game out of learning the creed and reciting it. Discussion groups on the different parts of the Catholic Creeds can help children understand why it is important to members of the Catholic church. Children can draw images, create stories and talk about different parts of the creeds to help memorize them.

Activities to Participate In While Learning About First Communion

    • Children who are studying to receive their First Communion can color pictures, participate in discussions about why Communion is important to Catholics, bake bread and talk about why Jesus broke bread at the Last Supper. They can also act out the Last Supper as a play, or practice receiving Communion by lining up and imitating how to receive it.
