Cost accounting is one of the important ways businesses and organizations make financial decisions. It is one part of the larger field of management accounting. Many paths are available to obtain a cost accounting position, but most employers require a four-year degree in the area of accounting. Many cost accountants are certified public accountants, while others have degrees in business and economics.

    • Financial analysts work to help individuals, businesses and organizations decide how to invest money. Individuals holding this job may also find ways for businesses to save money, determine whether debts are paid and look at the area of mergers. Financial analysts often have four-year degrees in the areas of business, economics and accounting. This is a specific job position at many larger companies, or the individual can work at an accounting firm that specializes in financial analysis.

    General Accountant

    • A cost accountant may hold the position of general accountant, particularly when working for a smaller business that does not need someone who specializes only in the area of cost accounting. A general accountant helps to balance the books, create budgets and pay taxes, in addition to offering advice on investing resources wisely. An individual may hold a job as a general accountant prior to specializing in cost accounting to gain experience in the workplace.

    Cost Analyst

    • The job title of cost analyst refers to an individual who specializes in costs. This job requires analyzing a business or organization's costs and productivity to relay the information to upper management. A cost analyst does cost analysis by measuring cost-benefit ratios, the costs of production, performance evaluation, process improvement and splitting data into easily measurable components. An individual in a cost analyst position begins by working as an auditor or general accountant before becoming specialized in costs.

    Auditor

    • Individuals in the field of cost accounting may work as an internal or external auditor. Internal auditors try to keep costs within an organization as low as possible. External auditors may work for the government to ensure that public companies follow legal accounting procedures. Auditors look at records, balance sheets, information security and productivity to advise upper management on areas where the organization could be lowering costs and increasing profit.

    Budget Analyst

    • A budget analyst works to plan and manage an organization's budget. This job is usually in larger organizations due to its specificity. This position involves negotiating budget options with upper management, keeping track of the budget throughout the year, suggesting ways to keep the organization from exceeding the fiscal plan, planning for the future and analyzing data relating to the budget.
