Pastor Retirement Ideas

Pastor Retirement Ideas thumbnail
All pastors must retire eventually.

Pastors serve their communities for years or sometimes even decades. Retirement can be a difficult transition for all parties involved, but if done right, this process can go smoothly for the pastor, any incoming pastors and his congregation. There are some restrictions on what an outgoing pastor can do after he retires, but overall the process should be painless.

  1. Church Parties

    • Church congregations gather frequently and a gathering to honor the legacy and ministry of the pastor is a good way to send him off to the world of retirement. A pot luck can provide food for everybody with no one church member having to bear much expense. A good-natured roast of the pastor can also provide amusement and allow the church members to share their thoughts and memories with the pastor before he retires and leaves their religious lives. Personalized gifts bearing a significant verse from the Bible or a message for the pastor may also be given to show the congregation's appreciation.

    Financial Planning

    • Pastors should start planning for their retirement early by putting some money from their pastoral salaries aside every month. Many churches don't establish retirement funds for their pastors either because of a lack of means or a lack of preparation. Social Security alone may not be enough to support a pastor in his declining years, so this saving will give a pastor greater means to support him and his family after he has stopped working. It is also possible for a church to continue paying a pastor after retirement. This is called a "nonqualified deferred compensation plan," but it has potential legal ramifications as churches are non-profit entities and can only spend so much on salaries. It is advises that churches wishing to pursue this route seek legal counsel so that it is done according to our nation's laws.

    Severing Ties

    • After retirement, a pastor must no longer engage in any pastoral duties with his original congregation. He can help get a new pastor situated but must not interfere with how this new pastor wishes to conduct church-related business. A pastor cannot also perform services at weddings, funerals, baptisms or other religious ceremonies for members of his old congregation. That pastor should also not visit their old church for six to 12 months after retirement and even then only at the invitation of the new pastor. These restrictions only apply to religious duties, so a retired pastor can still maintain all of the friendships he has developed over his years of service.

    Future Plans

    • Even though retired pastors cannot stay in their communities and serve their congregations, their ministries can continue. The churches can sponsor mission trips for the pastors. The retired pastors can then be sent abroad or to other distant places to spread the messages of their churches. This will allow retired pastors to continue doing the religious work they have chosen to dedicate their lives to while not interfering with their original congregations. Of course, pastors are not obligated to continue serving. If pastors wish, they can retire to houses by lakes and spend the rest of their days fishing and reading.
