Ideas for Icebreaker Games for Christian Youth

Icebreakers help people get to know one another at parties and other social gatherings; they literally help "break the ice" between people who do not know each well. For Christian youth, this typically involves meetings of the church's youth group. Icebreakers can help set the tone for deeper and more emotional connections between peers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cross the Line

    • Cross the Line is designed to get youth talking about non-threatening topics so that they will be more comfortable when the opportunity comes to open up. Have the students line up and then draw an imaginary line in front of them. Ask a simple question, such as, "How many of you have slept in a tent in the past year?" or "Who has seen a good movie recently?" Anyone who has an answer to the question steps over the imaginary line. Everyone then gathers in a circle to hear from those who wish to share.

    Ha Ha

    • Ha Ha is a simple game that begins with all of the youth forming a circle. The first player turns to the next and says "Ha" in any manner he or she chooses. The goal is to make the next person laugh. If the student does laugh, then the student is out. If not, then the player turns to the next person and says "Ha, ha." This continues until only one person remains.

    Never Have I Ever

    • The object of Never Have I Ever is to eliminate other players who have done things that you have not. Everyone stands in a circle, facing one another, and holds up five fingers. The first player states something they have never done in the form of "Never Have I Ever...". Anyone who has done what is mentioned must lower one finger. The last person left with fingers up wins. It is important to tell students that the thing they have never done must be true -- to maintain the integrity of the game.

    Sock Thief

    • Sock Thief can be played as individuals or as teams. Each player removes her shoes and gets on her hands and knees. The object of the game is to remove as many other people's socks as possible while keeping your own. Once both socks are gone, you are eliminated. The winner is the last person or team with at least one sock in her possession.
