Corner fireplaces present various problems when it comes to decorating around them. They don't conform to the room's right angles, so knowing where to position furniture can be difficult. They also cause difficulty in positioning a television in a place where it can be easily viewed by everybody. These problems are easier to solve in larger rooms because there's more space to position furniture at different angles, and you can create multiple focal points. These problems can be overcome in smaller rooms, however, creating a functional and pleasing design. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Focal Points

    • Determine what you want your room's main focal point to be. The two main points that people choose are the fireplace or the television. Think about what point you want your room to center around and what point you use most. Fireplaces naturally draw attention, but you might use the television more and select this to be your focal point. Choosing your focal point will help you design the room because it's the area you will arrange your main pieces of furniture around.

    Sofas and Chairs

    • Position your sofa parallel to the focal point. Place two armchairs on either side of the sofa so that they're at right angles to it. This forms a square shape between the sofa, chairs and focal point. Leave enough room for people to walk around the furniture and access all the seats. In larger rooms you can create two separate seating areas for two different focal points. Small rooms might not have enough floor space for the sofa to sit parallel to the fireplace, so position it against one of the two walls that aren't adjoined to the fireplace, which allows you to see the feature in your peripheral vision.

    Tables

    • Place a coffee table in front of the sofa and armchairs. If there's not enough room to include a coffee table inside the seating area, place a long table behind the sofa to keep lights or a telephone on. Decorate the coffee table with photos or keep a book on it for people to read.

    Televisions

    • Hang the television above the fireplace to combine the two focal points. You can also build it into the wall above the fireplace if your budget allows. This joint focal point allows you to enjoy both the fire and television, and maximizes space. Alternatively, place the television at the opposite end of the room with a separate seating area or on the wall next to the fireplace with the sofa against the opposite wall.

    Accessories

    • Decorate the mantelpiece with photos and candlesticks. Place a large photo or painting in the middle of the mantel, and lean it against the wall. Decorate around the base of the fireplace during warmer months when the fireplace is not being used, with things like photos or ornaments. Keep the mantelpiece simple if you're hanging a TV above it because otherwise it might look cluttered. You can place photos on the windowsill, and you can build a cabinet against one of the walls for your ornaments.
