Government programs can help women in need of homes.

No one wants to ask for help but there are times when that is exactly what has to be done. Women sometimes find themselves in dire situations where they need help to find affordable housing. Help for women in need of homes is available through a number of private and public programs.

  1. United States Department of Agriculture

    • The United States Department of Agriculture offers loans and grants for very low, low and moderate-income families across America. This aid comes in the form of loan guarantees, loan and grant money to help women buy a home. Money is also available to help provide necessary repairs for existing homes in need of improvement. A financial need must be recognized but most grants and loans do not have to be paid back.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

    • The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has a voucher program that assists low-income families to rent homes in the private market. Housing is not restricted to subsidized housing and almost any home that meets the program's requirements can be chosen. This can include single-family homes, townhouses or apartments. The need for such housing often exceeds what is available for funding. In these cases a waiting list is established.

    Vision House

    • Single moms often have an increased need for financial assistance. Besides government grants and loans, there are some private organizations that offer help specifically for single moms. Vision House is one example of this type of assistance. Vision House helps single moms and their children with housing, counseling, food, clothing, education, and medical and dental care. Residents are required to be homeless and have an income that falls below 30 percent of the median income. Residents can usually stay at a Vision House residence for about two years. Our Families, Our Future, and Catholic Charities are other private resources for women in need of homes.

Banks and Other Forms of Private Lending

    • Government grants are available but can sometimes be limited, or the resources might be exhausted by the time someone in need applies for the grant. There are also times when women in need do not qualify at the time for government assistance because of past income or assets. In this case, private lending might be the best option available. Many banks and credit unions offer low interest loans with few restrictions.
