Parade Float Ideas for a Dance Team

Parades commemorate holidays and events across the globe. Whether celebrating the Chinese New Year or the Fourth of July, parades welcome local and national organizations and groups to participate. While some groups march within the parade, others design custom floats to showcase to the crowds. For a dance team participating in a parade, selecting the right theme for a float and performance is critical to executing a successful showcase.

  1. Country Western

    • For the dance team studying country line dancing, a country western theme would make an appropriate design for a parade float. Dance team members could design a country saloon atop a flatbed. The group would need to be able to draw upon some woodworking skills when building the float. Dancers could don country western ensembles and cowboy boots and strategically stop along the parade route to perform a line dance for the crowds.

    Roaring 20s

    • For dancers looking to showcase their dance knowledge from another decade, the Roaring Twenties would make for an entertaining parade float option. Dancers could dress as flappers and gangsters from the era and perform well-choreographed dances from the time period along the parade route. Other dancers could ride along in a matching float, such as a jazz club or dance hall. The costumes and music from the time are essential to executing a successful float.

    80s Flashback

    • A fun way for a dance team to let loose along a parade route is by drawing upon the decade of the 1980s. The MTV Network was founded in 1981, so a float could be designed to look like the MTV set, with a stage and the network's signature astronaut, "Moon Man," as part of the backdrop. Music from pop icons of the era, such as Michael Jackson and Madonna, could be blasted from large speakers atop the float.

    Sock Hop

    • Another decade that translates well in the form of a parade float for a dance team is the 1950s. Members of the dance team could wear poodle skirts and saddle shoes while dancing to tunes from the time period. The theme of the float could look like a sock hop, with large records and school posters. The float could be pulled by a classic car from the decade for added effect.
