If you are sitting in an office chair that doesn't provide proper support your back is going to hurt.

Back pain that plagues many people often it is the result of sitting in an office chair all day that does not provide proper support. When selecting a chair for your home or office, pick one that is ergonomically correct. Ergonomics refers to the right fit between things that people do, the environment they live and work in and how they do them. When you use an ergonomically correct chair, you create less stress on your back and body. You are more comfortable and work better. Over time, your back may not hurt as much -- or at all.

  1. Situating Your Chair and Yourself

    • Determine the desired height that the chair should be, based on the height of your work station or desk when selecting a good chair for your office. The type of work you do and your height factor into this decision. Adjust the chair according to your own physical proportions and needs to prevent back pain. Sit as closely to you desk as possible, but in a comfortable position. Your upper arms should be parallel to your shins. Place your hands on the work surface and see if your elbows are at a 90-degree angle. If they're not, adjust your chair, either pulling it upward or lowering it. You also need to slide your fingers under your thigh at the front edge of the chair. If you can do this easily, that's good. If it's too tight of a squeeze, use an adjustable footrest so you can prop up your feet.

    Do This

    • Sit in the chair and press your butt against the back of the chair. Now, try to pass your clenched fist between the front of your chair and the behind back of your calf. If you are unable to do this, your chair is too deep. Bring the backrest forward and use a low back support pillow or cushion to support your lower back.

    Swingseat Chair

    • A Swingseat chair provides comfort and back. It automatically and continuously adjusts when you move, including moving from a full forward incline to a recline or full backward tilt without your adjusting it. The chair does it by itself. This chair follows your body when you move and provides lumbar and back support. The chair has a tension-adjustable backrest.

    X-Chair Zero Gravity Reclining

    • Another type of chair which may not be appropriate in the office but will certainly work at home is the X-chair. It features a wide headrest, footrest and reclines. You get the benefits of zero gravity reclining when sitting in this chair. It provides superb lumbar support which you can adjust to your personal preference. This chair also helps you maintain good postures while you are relaxing. When you sit in the X-chair, your spine decompresses. This enables your spinal discs to relax and expand, which eliminates pressure on the heart as well as improving circulation.
