What Are Night Crew Jobs?

Save

Traditional night crew jobs, also called the graveyard shift, can run from 10 at night to 6 in the morning and are often held by young people who go to school during the day. Working this shift means making significant adjustments to your schedule, but it might be worth it since many night crew jobs pay extra in the form of a night shift differential.

Restaurants

  • As the country's second largest private sector employer, the restaurant industry is fast-paced and ever-changing. As of 2011, the industry employs 12.8 million workers and is forecast to add another 1.3 million jobs during 2011 alone. Restaurant night crew jobs include restaurant management, wait staff, counter crew in fast food establishments and culinary staffers such as cooks and chefs.

Security

  • Major issues causing growth in the security industry are related to crime, vandalism and terrorism. Security guards are called on to protect public and private property and buildings; they can also be responsible for protecting people. In hotels, night watchmen are responsible for the safety of guests, employees and property, as well as any property assets associated with the business. They can also work in nightclubs, retail establishments that are open 24 hours a day and businesses that require overnight security.

Grocery Stores

  • Supermarkets and convenience stores that don't sell gas are the two sectors that make up the grocery store industry. There were more than 85,000 grocery stores and more than 25,000 convenience stores in the United States in 2008; night crew jobs in the grocery industry can include night stockers, cashiers and store managers.

Health Care

  • Approximately 545,000 establishments make up the health care industry. Many of these are private physicians, dentists and other health practitioners such as acute care clinics and nursing homes. Hospitals employ 40 percent of all workers and offer night crew positions for doctors, nurses, nurse aids, clerical and sanitation workers.
