Social science is a broad-ranging field of study that encompasses such subjects as sociology, anthropology, history, political science, geography, archaeology and economics. The social sciences study society from these perspectives. As a field for research, the interdisciplinary nature of the field makes it a fairly simple one in which to develop research topics and projects.

1 Area Studies

Incorporate several sub-disciplines within the social sciences into one project by conducting an area study or research project. Area studies focus on one particular region of the world such as Africa, Asia, Latin America or South America. Be more specific and limit your research and project to the understanding of one particular group of people such as the aborigines in Australia or ethnic groups within a country. Projects can include elements of geography, history, anthropology, archaeology and any other related social science discipline that sheds light on your research. Area studies can include a broad overview of a particular area or they may involve focusing on one aspect of that area such as its history or geography.

2 Political Issues

Political issues are central to the history of the United States and other countries. Research a hotly debated political issue by attempting to understand the issue from a historical standpoint and from the point-of-view of both sides of the contemporary debate (if applicable). Thoroughly research both sides of the argument and use the research to have a mock debate, presenting both sides of the argument.

3 History Project Topics

History is rife with opportunity for social science projects. The study of history, like geography, is simple to integrate with several perspectives from such disciplines as political science, anthropology and sociology. History topics can include an event that is historical in nature, such as the American Revolution or American Civil War. Other topics, however, can also prove interesting to students who have already studied such events and wish to move beyond the typical areas of study. Potential projects might be centered around such topics as the role of women in the American Revolution or black civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s. Biographical studies make good research projects and allow you to get creative with your presentation. For instance, you may choose a famous author, such as Mark Twain, to study and present an autobiographical sketch of his life. Dressing up like Twain and narrating his life accomplishments may gain you some additional points for creativity.
