The Indian god Vishnu is often depicted on fabric paintings and murals.

Indian fabric painting, otherwise known as batik painting, is the art of decorating fabric with natural paints. It dates back to 3,000 BC when small, painted wooden blocks and hand-decorated fabrics were first found in Asia. Popular Indian designs include animals (particularly cows, which are considered to be holy); moons and stars; flowers; and famous Indian gods and goddesses.

A sarong or sari is perfect for decorating with Indian fabric paints. A sarong is a long piece of cloth, which is secured in a knot around the waist, and can be worn by both men and women. Bright block colors, such as vibrant pinks, reds and oranges, work particularly well on sarongs.

A handkerchief is a good starting project for someone new to Indian fabric painting. Plain, cotton handkerchiefs can be decorated with fun shapes and intricate designs. Special batik wax painted directly onto the fabric will block the paint from entering certain areas to create a unique effect.

Hairbands and bandannas can be decorated with traditional Indian paints. Simply measure the circumference from the top of the head round to the nape, then add on an extra 10 inches to allow the hairband or bandanna to be tied in a knot. Decorate the plain fabric with the Indian paints and allow to dry naturally for at least 24 hours.
