Ways to Understand the GED Math for Free
The General Educational Development (GED) tests cover five subject areas. People have various reasons for taking the GED. Other people may have no interest in taking the whole test and only want to brush up on their math skills to take and pass the math portion of the GED. Beware when searching for resources because many individuals and companies try to get money out of people in exchange for teaching them those math skills. No one needs to pay any money to brush up on his math skills. You can find all the necessary resources for free.

Public Library

The public library has a wealth of materials to help you prepare for the GED math test. People often do not use the public library system enough. Public libraries have a wealth of resources and information for free. If you do not have a library card, simply bring your identification and proof of residence to your local public library to apply for a card. Once you have your card, you can check out many books, videos and software relating to the GED math section. You will find instructional materials and practice test materials at the library. If your local library does not have any materials in stock, you can ask if they can order them from another library.
Adult Education

Many communities have some form of adult education program that will help students prepare for the various portions of the GED. You will often find these programs run by the public school system or possibly by a local community college. These GED preparation programs provide free materials for the students to use while enrolled in the program. Different communities have different ways of organizing and funding their programs, so you will likely find varying resources among the communities. Some communities provide instructional classes and workbooks, and others may just have a computer lab for students to come into to work through test preparation programs.

You will find a wealth of information relating to the GED math test on the Internet. However, you must be cautious when searching for resources because many sites will try to charge you for their services, which may not provide much help once you've given them your money. PBS, KET and the National Center on Adult Literacy of the University of Pennsylvania have come together to provide Literacy Link, a completely free and comprehensive site that provides practice exams, study materials, test-taking tips and learning modules. The American Council on Education develops the GED test. You can find much helpful information for free on its website as well.

You may also find the PBS Literacy Link GED Connection helpful. PBS produced 39 VHS videos in the GED Connection series, including 13 videos on GED math skills. These videos include experts in the field and provide simple instruction relating to the math skills necessary for the GED math test. Most public libraries and many adult education programs carry this video series, which means you can view them for free. Many PBS stations also air this series. If you can find this on your local PBS station, you can record it to replay as many times as you need.
