Five Principles of Enlightened Marketing
Enlightened Marketing is the brand name for a package of marketing concepts used by small and large businesses to improve exposure and reputation for their brand. The name comes from two definitions of "enlightened"--both the idea of applying intelligence and education to marketing, and to generating at least the appearance of social responsibility. Other marketing brands that use similar programs include "Guerilla Marketing" and Tom Callos's "The New Way Network."

Network Marketing
-
Network marketing means using the fractal nature of word of mouth. If you get 10 people excited, they will make another 10 excited, who may make another five each excited and so forth. These ripples in the pond of public awareness are made through social network presence, newsletters, pod casts, video posts and other information you can put up on the web at no cost. Enlightened marketers have a systematic plan for establishing and maintaining their network marketing.
Business Card Bonanza
-
You can buy sharp, professionally printed business cards for less than a penny each, then distribute them like a clown throwing candy at a parade. Business card marketing starts with the "3-foot rule," which is to never allow a new person to get within 3 feet of you and leave without your business card. Include your card in all written correspondence or anything else you mail or hand out. If enough business cards circulate, some will find their way into the hands of buyers.

Productized Marketing
-
Most people pay for their marketing. If you can get customers to pay you for marketing, you're way ahead of the pack. Newsletters are a common example of this kind of marketing. Clients don't pay money for the newsletter, but they do subscribe to a free newsletter by providing you with their valuable contact information and attention. The newsletter, in turn, gives just enough useful information to persuade the reader to buy the products you charge for. Other media for this kind of marketing include video feeds, pod casts and DVDs.
Affiliate Marketing
-
Jay Levinson, founder of "Guerilla Marketing," loves affiliate marketing, describing it as a way of getting a top-notch sales team without spending a dime in salary. Affiliate marketing means signing up interested parties to sell your product for you in exchange for a percentage of the sales price. According to Levinson, your current customer base is the best source of strong affiliate relationships because your customers are already excited and knowledgeable about your products.
Service Marketing
-
Service marketing is a way of remaining socially conscious while improving your company's exposure in your community. The idea is simple: volunteer time or goods for a local cause, then prepare a press release. Although there is a bewildering variety of service opportunities, your best efforts will be in areas where you can provide a unique or memorable contribution. A martial arts school might put on a demonstration at a local senior center, while a landscaping service might maintain a park.
