Find ways to keep your bored teen out of trouble.

It is important to make sure your teenager has enough positive things going on in her life to keep her occupied. Boredom can be a teen's worst enemy. Bored teens are more likely to turn to drugs, partying, overeating and other dangerous behaviors than their busy counterparts. If your teen has been complaining of boredom, find effective activities to fill her time.

  1. Sports and Clubs

    • Make sure that your teen is involved in at least one after school sport or activity at all times. Sports and clubs can help teens in many ways. Teens can make friends with teammates and club members who share similar interests. Your teen can also strive to achieve personal bests such as scoring a certain amount of goals in a soccer game, or winning first prize in an art club competition. Between homework and sports commitments, your teen won't have much time to be bored.

    Part-Time Job

    • Getting a part-time job after school or on the weekends will teach your teen to be more responsible. In addition to the job itself taking many of your teen's non-school hours, your teen will also be earning money that he can spend during his other free time to go to the movies or out for pizza with friends. Teens with jobs may also learn to appreciate a little bit of downtime now and then, instead of complaining of boredom.

    Volunteer

    • Volunteering is another way to show your teen that there are many worse situations in life than a little boredom. Teens can volunteer at soup kitchens or at hospitals, where they can have the chance to interact with people going through difficult situations in life. This will help your teen to spend her extra time doing good within the community and will also help her to feel thankful for the blessed life that she has.

    Alone Time

    • Teens need to realize that alone time and down time are a part of life and are not always a bad thing. Give your teen suggestions on how to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. These quiet moments can be a great time to read a new book, watch favorite movies, make a picture collage or bake cupcakes. It is very possible for your teen to keep himself occupied without a structured activity going on or friends around.
