Compatibility Tests for Relationships

Compatibility Tests for Relationships thumbnail
A compatibility test can help you determine if you are meant to be.

Finding an ideal partner is on the minds of many people today. Forty-three percent of the adult American population is single, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The census also reports that as of 2002 there were more than 900 dating services available to find a potential mate. If you are in a relationship and want to know if you are headed in the right direction, toward a goal of marriage and a family, you might be interested in compatibility tests. Compatibility tests can examine your current relationship or help you find a suitable mate by looking at your own personality and beliefs.

  1. Big Five Compatibility Test

    • The Big Five Compatibility Test offered by Similar Minds is a test you can take on your own to determine the compatibility between you and your partner. You will answer five introductory questions regarding gender, length of relationship and your personal rating of the relationship. You then will answer questions about your beliefs, personality, interactions with other people and other preferences. The questions reflect five categories -- extroversion, friendliness, orderliness, emotional stability and open-mindedness. These are based on the Big Five personality traits. Extroversion looks at how social and talkative you are. Friendliness looks at your good nature and trust in others. Orderliness determines responsibility and dependability. Emotional stability refers to how much anxiety or depression you are prone to. Open-mindedness looks at imagination and independence. These determine a percentage rating of how similar you and your partner are. The higher the percentage ratings, the more compatible you and your partner are supposed to be.

    FOCCUS Test

    • The Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study test is used as a pre-marriage measure, usually for couples to be married in the Catholic church. The questionnaire contains 156 items in areas such as communication, problem-solving skills, religious beliefs, parenting, sexuality and career goals. Couples take the test together but do not compare or talk about their answers. The testing administrator, usually a priest, deacon or mentoring couple, scores the tests. The results, called the FOCCUS Couples Report, are discussed at future meetings. The report generates a percentage of compatibility in each area tested. Couples can discuss their strengths and weaknesses with a priest or mentor couple before their marriage ceremony.

ACE Free Online Couple Compatibility Test

    • The Agreements, Communication and Emotions test is available for you and your partner to take online. You will need to register on their website (see Resources) with your names and email addresses. You then will be emailed a testing link and given a password, for no cost. You and your partner will answer 57 questions related to children, sex, eating habits and finances, among others. Upon completion of the test, you are given an email link to your results, which contain your compatibility score, along with recommendations for improving any weak areas in your relationship. If you want, you can unsubscribe to the mailing list after taking the test to prevent future emails from the website.

    TRUE Compatibility Test

    • The TRUE compatibility test was developed by relationship research scientists to help determine the best partner match for your personality and interests. Sign up for a username and password on their website (see Resources) using your email address. Log in to the website and complete the assessment, which asks questions about your interests, dislikes, demographics and qualities you look for in a partner. The test is verified by the American Psychological Association and measures 99 relationship factors. Your generated report, which as of March 2011 costs $9.99, gives you a personality profile, which identifies communication style, attitudes toward sex, money and children, as well as stress tolerance and more. You also are given an Ideal Partner profile to help you determine a compatible partner.
