Ballet Instructor Certification
In the highly-competitive world of professional dancing, many ballet dancers experience difficulties finding work, and those who do typically retire in their 30s or 40s. Many ballet dancers choose to become ballet instructors at private dancing schools, colleges and in public schools. Most schools prefer to hire ballet teachers who have professional certification from a recognized organization.

American Ballet Theater
-
The American Ballet Theater offers six levels of certifications for dance instructors. To qualify for initial certification, dancers must have formal training. The ABT considers candidates who complete two initial trainings with the theater or who have a degree in dance as formally trained. For each level of certification, candidates must attend an additional training, which is typically offered in New York City. At the conclusion of the training, candidates take a test to receive the appropriate level of certification.
Royal Academy of Dance Canada
-
The Royal Academy of Dance Canada is the recognized accrediting organization for ballet instructors in Canada. To qualify for certification through the RADC, candidates must complete professional ballet training either with the academy or another institution. Those trained by the RADC must pass through eight levels of training to be eligible for the certification program. Those admitted to the program study through a distance education program while working locally as a dance instructor. They also participate in two week-long training courses at the RADC in Toronto. At the completion of the entire program, the RADC awards dancers with instructor certification.

Cecchetti USA offers ballet instructor certification in the Cecchetti method, a type of ballet curriculum. To qualify for initial certification through the program, the teacher certificate I, candidates must first complete four levels of Cecchtti dance training and be at least 16 years of age. The additional levels of certification after the initial credential are the certificate II, the associate, licentiate and fellow designations. For each level of certification, instructors take an examination during which involves teaching a class under supervision. Each level also has its own training and skill requirements that candidates must meet to qualify for certification.
State Certifications
-
Some states offer dance courses in their public schools and require instructors for these classes to gain certifications through the states' Departments of Education. Each state has its own requirements, but a minimum of a bachelor's degree and completion of a teacher preparation program is generally necessary. States may have additional requirements as well. For example, in New York, prospective dance teachers must pass a written examination. Most states also require candidates to pass a criminal background check.
