Tips for the DSA Driving Test
In the United Kingdom, the Department of Transportation oversees the work of The Driving Standards Agency, or DSA. It is the job of the DSA to set the standards for the theoretical written test and practical driving test given to those wishing to acquire a UK driver's license. Throughout the UK, the DSA offers theoretical testing at about 150 locations and driving tests at 400 centers. The driving test is about 40 minutes long and, though it may seem daunting, can be passed with adequate driving practice and preparation.

Preparation
-
The best way to ensure passing your DSA driver's test is to simply be prepared before you take it. Give yourself adequate practice time and don't schedule your test until you feel you are ready. When you are ready, leave for your test appointment early. This will allow you to feel comfortable rather than rushed and will prevent you from being late if you run into unexpected delays. Examiners have the right to refuse to test you without refunding your booking fee if you are more than 5 minutes late to an appointment. Also be sure to use a restroom before you get to your testing center. Not all centers provide public restroom facilities, and a 40 minute driving test can be quite uncomfortable with a full bladder.
What to Bring
-
Bring all of the required paperwork and information with you to the test. You must bring the vehicle you wish to take the test in along with the car's insurance information. The car must be properly registered and be displaying its license plate. You are further required to bring both parts of your photo card license as well as the certificate you were given when you passed the written theory test. Failure to bring the required documents could postpone your test. If desired, you may also bring someone with you to sit in the back of the car during your test and listen to any feedback you receive. If you bring the person who taught you to drive, that person will be able to help you if you fail the test by providing further instruction in the areas where you most need help.

During the Test
-
DSA examiners look to see if the drivers they test are considerate to others on the road, able to anticipate and recognize danger and are confident in their ability to control the car. The examiner will also test whether the driver's confidence is warranted by asking her to perform several driving maneuvers. If you make a mistake during your test, calmly correct it right away and move on. Dwelling on a mistake can cause you to make more. Obey all traffic signs and signals while you are driving and be safe, but don't confuse safe driving with excessively slow driving, Though you should not speed during your test, driving too slow can be a cause for failure. If you find any of the examiner's directions unclear get clarification before proceeding.
If You Do Fail
-
If you do fail the test the test the first time you take it don't panic. Listen to the examiner's feedback and, if necessary, ask questions. Make sure you understand what you did wrong before you leave the test center so that you know what to practice. Get more driving practice and try to focus on correcting the errors pointed out to you by the examiner. You can reschedule your test as soon as 10 business days after failing and will not be penalized for having failed your previous test.
