Some families choose to only give gifts to children at Christmastime.

The holidays are a time to show your loved ones how much you care by spending time with each another and sharing thoughtful meals and gifts. However, holiday gift-giving can be difficult, especially for those on a budget or who have large families. Additionally, some families prefer to minimize consumerism but still want to make their loved ones feel special. Fortunately, there are many ways to exchange gifts with your family without stress.

  1. Children Only

    • Adults are often happy enough to be in the company of other family members at Christmastime and thus prefer to focus gift-giving on the children. There is almost nothing more joyous than seeing the excitement of children when they are opening gifts on Christmas morning. Toys, DVDs, books and games are popular gifts for children.

    Secret Santas

    • Institute a Christmas Secret Santa drawing for your extended family. Write each family member's name down onto individual slips of paper and toss all of the names into a bucket. Have each family member pick a name from the bucket; they must then only purchase a gift for the person whom they selected. If your family is on a budget, you can set a price limit or range for the gifts.

    Gifts for the Whole Family

    • Give an item that the whole family can enjoy, such as a board game or a piece of artwork that everyone will admire. Many organizations, including museums, zoos and movie theaters, offer family memberships; purchase a year's membership that the whole family can enjoy. Making a donation in the family's name to their favorite charity is a gift that is sure to warm the hearts of every family member.

    Vacation

    • Being able to enjoy a fun and relaxing experience with the whole family is a wonderful gift. Instead of exchanging gifts, use that money to take a family vacation together. Choose a location that everyone will like. For example, for families with small children, a trip to Disneyland will be much appreciated. Alternatively, a tropical holiday will please adults and children alike while a European getaway will be an unforgettable cultural delight. You can plan the trip to take place over the holidays or for a later date in the year. If you purchase a vacation package for the off-season, however, it will be more reasonably priced.
