Women can get into team-coaching or can coach just one athlete.

The days when women had to be content being mere spectators at sporting events are long gone. Today, women not only actively participate in sports, but they also play an important role behind the scenes. Women who are passionate about sports can now pick from a variety of athletic, administrative and broadcasting jobs.

  1. Athletics

    • Most major sports like tennis, basketball, golf and baseball now have women's leagues. Professional athletes are those who compete in a particular sport and get paid for it. An athlete's job is physically and mentally demanding because there are many aspirants, and few who make it to the top. This requires a lot of dedication, hard work, intensive training and stamina. Women athletes do not receive the same amounts of prize money and endorsements that male athletes do, but there is a growing demand from women's sporting organizations and from the athletes themselves, that women be paid on par with the men. Interest in women's sports activities is now growing, as are sponsorship deals.

    Coaching

    • The role of a coach is to help train participants, manage their performance, give them feedback and ensure that they keep up their levels of fitness. Coaches also play a big role in motivating the teams, and help their team members gain confidence, skills and techniques. It has been scientifically proven that women and men use different ways of thinking, reasoning and resolving conflict; this means that women coaches are more likely to understand the psyche of female athletes, and are able to motivate and help them perform better. The belief that male coaches are superior to female coaches is changing; while male and female coaches may have different styles of working, it is now accepted that female coaches are not inferior to them in any respect.

    Broadcasting

    • Sports broadcasters or sportscasters are professionals who work on different aspects of broadcasting or sports journalism. There are a variety of jobs in this field -- sports presenting, reporting, production and talent management. While sports presenters and reporters appear before the camera, producers, camerapersons and talent directors work behind the scenes to keep the show running smoothly. With the increasing popularity of sports channels, radio shows and webcasts, there are plenty of opportunities available for aspirants who have an in-depth knowledge of sports and are familiar with the media.

    Physical therapy and Sports Medicine

    • Sports medicine is an emerging field in physical therapy. With professional sports being very intense and events being held year-round, players need help maintaining their levels of health and fitness. This is where a sports therapist comes in. The therapist's role is to ensure that players are fully fit and routinely screen them to ensure that they are fit enough to compete. The sports therapist also organizes group and one-on-one fitness training and helps players prevent, treat and recover from injuries. Most sports teams today have a physical therapist who travels with them whenever they play.
