Ideas for Home Curtain Design

Curtains that start at the ceiling can make a room seem higher.

Curtains are often an underutilized design space; when done effectively, they can complete the decor of a room and add a finished, polished look to the space. As you plan your curtain styles, take into account the amount of privacy you need or the light you want to let in, and look for fabrics and materials that will act as punctuation for the rest of the room. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Multiple Colors

    • If you want to make an unusual statement in your home, use curtains in multiple colors; this is particularly effective in children's rooms or rooms with a more modern feel. Instead of two identical panels on either side of the window, use three individual panels pushed off to one side. Choose each panel in a color or pattern that will work with the others and the color scheme of the room. This type of curtain arrangement is a good way to mix in a bold pattern without overwhelming the space.

    Asymmetrical Valance

    • If you want to use traditional curtains with a contemporary flair, go with an asymmetrical valance. Like a standard valance, you can drape a long, sheer panel around the curtain rod to create soft loops of fabric that will draw attention to the window. Instead of leaving the ends of the fabric level, make one pool on the floor while the other hangs level with the bottom of the window. The offset angle will be elegant and dramatic without adding bold colors or patterns. This is particularly useful when you have a single window in a hallway or in an odd place, as it can stand alone as a window treatment.

    Unusual Curtain Rods

    • Add an unexpected twist to your curtains by choosing an unusual curtain rod. Instead of a standard straight rod, look for an item that complements the design of the room. In a natural room, for example, find a rod shaped like a tree branch, or spray-paint a branch and use it as a rod. Choose items that support the design: a hockey stick or a baseball bat in a sports room, a length of bamboo in a tropical room, or an antique sword in a medieval theme room.

    Ceiling to Floor

    • To make a window more dramatic, use curtains that hang from the ceiling to the floor. Run a heavy-duty rod along the top of the room and choose curtains with a loop enclosure to hide the rod. For a traditional, formal room, use curtains in a thick material with rich details, such as brocade; you can use sheers or more casual material for an equally dramatic but softer look. Floor-to-ceiling curtains emphasize the height of the room and make the entire wall a focal point.
