Reform schools can give young offenders an education.

Reform schools were introduced in the United States after it was realized that children who were incarcerated with adult prisoners often emerged from prison without being rehabilitated. The term reform school is rarely used now, and these types of institutions are rather referred to as" juvenile correctional institutions" or "youth detention centers."

  1. History & Purpose

    • Reform schools became established throughout the United States during the 19th century, with the first opening in 1846. Effectively prisons for children, these types of institutions focus on education rather than punishment and provide recreation, counseling and health assessment in an effort to prepare young offenders for adult life. High school diplomas, general equivalency diplomas and vocational training can be obtained at the majority of reform schools. However, reform schools also provide specialized education depending on what type of offense the juvenile has committed.
