Unique First Birthday Themes
Most parents want to celebrate their baby's first birthday with a party. Since 1-year-olds are too young to understand the concept of a birthday, the birthday party mostly represents an opportunity for the parents to celebrate and make some cute photo opportunities. Rather than choosing a theme revolving around a specific character, choose a unique theme that will help you to create timeless photos and memories. Does this Spark an idea?

Animal Themes
-
Most 1-year-olds are starting to recognize and appreciate animals. With an animal-themed party you can decorate your home with cute animal posters, an animal-shaped pinata and animal-shaped balloons or make a cake in the shape of your child's favorite animal. Guests can participate in the theme by bringing animal-themed gifts. Give your party an additional unique twist by specifying a Noah's Ark theme, a farm animal theme, a zoo theme or a safari theme.
Color-Themed Parties
-
Transform your home or party space with a color-themed party. You can choose a traditional baby color like pastel pink or blue or liven things up with a bold color like bright orange or deep purple. Decorate your party room with streamers, balloons and a big "happy birthday" sign with your child's name on it. Push your theme further by making a rainbow-themed party that features all the colors of the rainbow. Make a rainbow layered cake with layers dyed with red, orange, yellow, green, purple and blue food coloring.

Luau or Fiesta Themes
-
If you are planning to invite family and grownup friends for a dinner party, plan a dinner around a theme. Fiesta or luau parties provide you with a menu plan as well as decorating ideas. For a fiesta party you can prepare Mexican fare like tacos, enchilada casserole, corn and rice and beans and decorate your home with sombreros, a pinata and Mexican blankets. For a luau, serve pulled pork, poi, pineapple and fish dishes and decorate with fake palm trees, sand and Hawaiian-themed fabrics.
Literature-Themed Parties
-
If you want your child's party to be unique you may want to stay away from popular television and movie characters, but you can turn to characters from your child's favorite books. Decorate with the colors that feature in the book's illustrations and print out enlarged pictures from the book to hang on the wall. Popular books that lend themselves to party themes include Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," Kay Thompson's "Eloise," Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in The Hat" and Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey's "Curious George."
