How to Install a Vinyl Corner Bead

Alexander Callos

Vinyl corner bead is installed on the corners of rooms. It allows drywall to be installed around the corners of walls. There are many different types of corner bead, including metal, paper and vinyl. Vinyl corner bead is flexible and easy to work with compared to the other types of corner bead. It must be installed properly for the corners of your walls to look professionally done. When you follow a few simple steps, you can have your corner bead installed in no time.

  1. Measure the height of the wood stud in the corner of the room. Run a tape measure from the top to the bottom and record the measurement. Measure the same distance on the vinyl corner bead and mark the cut location with a black marker.

  2. Cut along the black line with a pair of tin snips. Tin snips cut just like scissors. Follow along the line until the vinyl corner bead has been cut in two. Line up the corner bead along the wall, and verify that it fits properly and the correct cut was made.

  3. Line up a drywall screw at the top of the vinyl corner bead and drill it into the stud through hole in the corner bead. Screw it until the head of the screw is flush with the corner bead. Move to the other side of the corner bead and install a drywall screw.

  4. Insert a screw on each side of the corner bead until you reach the bottom. Cover the corner bead with joint compound. Dip a taping knife into a bucket of joint compound and spread out the joint compound over the corner bead.

  5. Spread out the joint compound until there is an even layer and no visible corner bead. Sand it down with medium grade sandpaper. Smooth out the surface in an even and circular motion.
