Persuasive Smoking Topics
A persuasive speech topic is based on a policy, fact or question. When you write a persuasive essay or speech, you hope to persuade others to follow your point of view. The work begins with a specific topic and includes research or facts to verify your claims. Persuasive smoking topics use different ideas associated with tobacco, including issues facing stores and employers.
-
Prevent Teen Smoking
-
Pick one way in which to stop teens from smoking or even trying their first cigarette. Cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise near schools, but the companies can still advertise on billboards, in shops and some restaurants even still have cigarette machines. The Food and Drug Administration restricted advertising near playgrounds and schools, beginning in 2009. Focus on preventing teen smoking by banning the machines, stopping advertising in large cities or creating an alternative campaign that shows teens the negative effects of smoking.
Ban Smoking at Work
-
Write a persuasive argument on why employers should ban smoking by employees on the job. Certain companies stopped letting employees smoke in company-owned vehicles, especially when the vehicles are used for sales calls and company events. Find research that indicates how banning smoking in the vehicles affected the workers positively, such as encouraging workers to stop smoking or cut back on their tobacco use. Most hospitals now prohibit smoking on hospital property. Explain how banning smoking on company grounds will help employees.

Who to Blame
-
A classic persuasive speech or persuasive essay topic relates to blaming the tobacco companies for smoking. Write an essay that takes that viewpoint or a completely different one. Consider blaming movies or television shows for glorifying smoking, the store owners for selling cigarettes or even the advertising companies that create the ad campaigns for tobacco companies. Explain why you think that specific group should be blamed for introducing cigarettes and turning non-smokers into smokers.
Allow Owners to Decide
-
Large cities and small communities across the country have passed laws and regulations that ban the usage of tobacco in public places. For your persuasive topic, choose to side with the owners of restaurants, bars and other public places. Explain how the laws may cost the establishments money, especially if smokers choose to visit a nearby town where smoking is still allowed. Write your persuasive essay on the reasons why individual owners should have the option to allow or ban smoking, while government-owned properties can stay smoke-free.
