Every color guard team needs a skilled baton twirler.

Though not widely recognized, baton twirling is a competitive sport that requires both skill and technique. Just like other athletes, baton twirlers must focus on maintaining good form while performing not only because it looks great, but also as a means of avoiding injury. There are several tips and hints for choreographing an unforgettable, winning routine.

  1. Solo Performers

    • A solo performer has the unique responsibility of captivating a crowd alone. While this might seem like a great deal of pressure, it's actually a fine opportunity for baton twirlers to be creative and try out new techniques. Without the burden of having to coordinate a team full of twirlers, solo performers should work on things like speed, gracefulness and showmanship. Some tricks for a solo performer to try out are multi-baton twirling, juggling or twirling with fire.

    Teams

    • A twirling team will be made up of several participants who might have different levels of training. Teams should consider their strengths and work on routines that showcase these talents. For example, a team that has a lot of trained dancers can implement dance moves, such as leaps and turns, into their routine. A team with gymnasts can use acrobatic moves to wow the crowd. Using timed steps and appropriate music can help the group stay in sync.

    Appearance

    • Part of putting on a great show is looking the part. This involves an eye-catching costume. Twirlers should consider adding tassels and other safe ornaments to their batons. Showmanship is an important part of the performance as well. Smiling, making eye contact with the crowd and laughing are all great tips for stealing the show. The routine should appear smooth and effortless, even if it requires a great deal of focus and coordination.

    Athleticism

    • Just like other athletes, baton twirlers need a certain level of fitness in order to get through their routines. Both solo twirlers and teams can implement athletic training or conditioning. The type of exercises that should be done are those that increase endurance, coordination and speed. Stretching is also important for maintaining flexibility. Frequent exercising will keep the mind sharp and increase the amount of sync between the body and mind.
