Beautifying your neighborhood can be easy and doesn't have to cost much.

When youths volunteer to participate in community beautification projects, they receive many benefits in addition to improving the environment. Children learn how to work together toward a common goal, gain a respect for the environment, learn the importance of maintaining it and gain a sense of self-satisfaction. Additionally, participating in a youth project is a nice resume builder for a college or job because children learn valuable skills including team work, cooperation and following directions. There are many beautification projects that children and teens may enjoy.

  1. Painting

    • Freshen up chipped paint or graffiti-ridden paint in common areas of the community. You might merely cover the old paint with a solid coat of paint or create a mural. The appearance of buildings can influence how the population in and around the community perceives it. If the buildings appears well-maintained, people may care for it better.

    Gardening

    • Community gardening projects can be ongoing because weeds tend to grow quickly, and the landscape will need regular maintenance. Activities can include mowing lawns, pulling weeds and laying mulch. Some community beautification projects may also involve planting. Typically, volunteers may donate their time and provide funds for the materials needed to perform the beautification project, but sometimes organizations or localities organizing the activity will provide tools or other assistance.

    Litter Patrol

    • Young people can also participate in cleaning up a community park or playground. This activity is particularly helpful after a storm or windy day that may cause excess debris. However, it can also be planned well in advance. Supplies include plastic bags and gloves. In addition to cleaning up litter, students can remove small branches and recyclables and empty community trash receptacles.

    Showcase Artistic Hobbies

    • Youth community projects can also be an opportunity to add some art to a community area. Parks, schools, libraries and other community common areas can benefit from photography, sculptures and other artwork that will make them more attractive. Many youths have artistic talent, and this is an ideal way to engage them in improving their neighborhoods.
