Games to Play With Rats
While some people may consider rats the subject of horror movies, others believe these scurrying rodents to be as pet-worthy as kittens and puppies. Rat lovers don't experience the creepy-crawlies, but instead find rats to be playful companions. Playing games with your rat will enhance your time with the rodents and encourage the rat's natural instincts to burrow, climb and run.

Hiding

Rats love to burrow, hide and find hidden items. Hide a piece of food in your rat's cage and watch him search until he finds it. Drop your rat into a clothes hamper and he will burrow around until he reaches the bottom. Once he works his way to the bottom of the hamper, take him out to prevent gnawing on the clothes. Rats also enjoy hide-and-seek games. Let your rat loose in a controlled setting so he doesn't get too lost. Make exaggerated noises and motions as you search for him.
Climbing

Rats are natural climbers. Dangle a small rope from the top of your rat's cage and watch her climb up it. You also can build a climbing frame with ropes, ladders and hanging toys that will give her hours of fun, since she can climb both vertically and horizontally.

Shoulder Riding

Your rat enjoys spending time with you, especially when he can be high above the ground. For special time together, perch your rat on your shoulder as you walk around, or allow him to rest there while you're watching TV.
Digging

Create an area for your rat to dig. Mix bird seed, grass seed and compost in a box. Allow the seed to take root and grow. Your rat will enjoy hiding, burrowing and chewing on the grass roots.
Chase

Rats scurry. Keep your rat busy for hours by chasing her around an enclosed floor space. Use a feather chaser to entice the rat and lead her in circles or the length of the room. Roll a ball across the floor and watch her chase after it.
