Some occupations, such as painter, require a great deal of creativity but many other occupations require at least some degree of creative thought.

Most occupations provide a degree of opportunity for those filling the positions to use their creative talents and strengths. Some occupations, however, offer more opportunities for creative expression than others. Some jobs appropriate for creative people include positions requiring almost complete creative effort to complete the essential functions of its tasks while others require only some creative effort.

  1. Performing and Fine Arts

    • People who want to work in a profession involving nearly constant creativity might enjoy working in fine art or performing art in theater, film and music videos. These industries require creative people to serve as writers, actors, editors, title creators, producers, painters, sculptors and other artists working in various media. Art gallery directors, dancers, musicians, photographers and choreographers also work in the fine art and performing art world. Theaters and production companies need creative people to design and create sets for plays, movies, television programs and music videos.

    Print Media

    • Print media includes written materials that you can hold in your hands, as well as materials people read on their computers. To produce print media, companies need creative people working as writers, authors, editors, agents, publishers, models, photographers, literary translators, cartoonists and graphic designers or artists.

    Live Media

    • The live media industry requires anchors, personalities, writers, producers, directors, cinematographers, camera operators and animators to create radio, news, documentaries and other reality television programs so individuals will tune in and continue to watch or listen.

    Textiles & Personal Care

    • Creative people might find their calling in designing and creating items to help individuals feel and look better, including makeup artists; cosmetologists; and fashion designers of clothing, footwear, jewelry, handbags, belts and other accessories.

    Building & Environment

    • The fields of architecture, interior design, commercial or industrial design and landscape architecture require creative people to design and build safe and functional physical spaces that are also aesthetically pleasing.

    Marketing & Retail

    • Retail and marketing firms are common throughout the United States and require creative people to work in public relations, advertising and promotions to design a company's market research; determine marketing strategy; produce sales, print and live media ads, publicity and pricing; and develop new products. Copywriters, graphic designers and retail display designers are also involved.

    Service Industry

    • Some occupations do not require the use of creativity all of the time but do have a creative component and might be more enjoyable and successful if filled by creative people. Such occupations include event disc jockeys; videographers; and photographers of portraits and special events, such as weddings. Event planners, floral designers, medical and scientific illustrators, stucco masons, chefs, attorneys, recreational therapists, computer programmers, sociologists, political scientists and engineers also have the opportunity to use creativity in their occupations.
