Being organized makes grocery shopping easier.

Grocery shopping is one of those chores many people view as a necessary evil. Everyone enjoys a kitchen full of fresh groceries, but spending the time in a crowded grocery store is anything but fun. Grocery shopping doesn't have to be a chore. The more organized you are before you go, the quicker and more efficient your trip will be. Organize your grocery list for the best shopping experience. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Running List

    • Maintaining a shopping list throughout the week can ease the burden of having to create a list from scratch when it's time to go to the grocery store. Tack a small white board or chalk board to the refrigerator or wall in your kitchen and have your family get into the habit of writing down what they need or want throughout the week. As soon as you use up a food item, write it down on the list so that you don't forget.

    Plan Your Meals

    • Planning your meals for the week in advance can help you to create and organize a complete and accurate grocery list. Think about what you and your family will have for breakfast, the meals you'll send your kids to school with and what you'll eat for dinner each night. Then consider snacks, fruit, dessert and beverages. Write down each ingredient for each meal and look through your cupboards, shelves and refrigerator to see what you already have and what you need to buy.

    Food Category

    • When it comes time to write out the actual list, it is easiest to separate the items you'll need by each food category. For example, list all fruit, vegetables, frozen items, dairy foods, butcher counter items, fish counter items, deli counter foods, pasta and rice, cereal, snacks, spices, beverages and peripherals, like paper towels, together.

    Store Layout

    • The last step in organizing your grocery list is to put it in an order that matches your grocery store's layout. For example, most often fruit and vegetables are in the first aisle of grocery stores, so you would place those items at the top of your list. Next may be the cereal aisle, and then the aisle with pasta, rice and maybe spices. Keep in mind that you may alter your route through the store depending on the foods that you need. For example, you may want to pick up foods that require refrigeration or freezing, like fresh meat, chicken, milk and ice cream, toward the end of your shopping trip.
