Pay homage to different fashion icons throughout a decade.

Over the centuries, fashion has evolved greatly and been shaped by different movements and icons. If you are hosting a fashion-themed party or event, consider showcasing the fashion of different decades, cultural icons and musical genres. When creating a fashion theme, ensure that attention is paid to hairstyles, makeup and accessories as well. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Decades

    • Each decade has a style distinct from its counterparts; each style makes an interesting fashion theme. For example, you can pay homage to the skintight clothing and bright colors of the 1980s or the bobby socks and poodle skirts of the 1950s. Alternatively, emphasize the bell-bottoms and flipped hairstyles of the 1970s. Ultimately, whether you pay homage to a single decade's fashion or all of them, you will find inspiration in the fashions of previous eras.

    Celebrity Icons

    • Celebrities have contributed greatly to the world of fashion. First Lady Jackie Kennedy stunned the world with her sophisticated yet chic pillbox hats and skirt suits. Likewise, Marilyn Monroe's curve-hugging dresses and blonde hair set her apart from other actresses of her time. Madonna set a trend with her unique hairstyles and lace accessories. Twiggy, a fashion model of the 1960s, led the Mod Fashion movement with her boyish look, bold choice of colors and patterns, and mini dresses. Jimi Hendrix was another fashion icon of the late 1960s with his unique patterns, bell bottoms and ruffled shirts. As of 2011, Lady Gaga and Beyonce both make fashion waves, Lady Gaga with her space-age outfits and Beyonce with her retro glamor style.

    Couture

    • Showcase runway looks as your fashion theme. Look to high-fashion magazines like Vogue or W for inspiration and attempt to copy runway hair and makeup styles for more authenticity. For added fun, demonstrate couture fashion from the year's different seasons, like fall, winter, summer and spring, to reflect changes in couture. If you are throwing a fashion-focused party, have guests bring in photos of the haute couture look they are trying to duplicate along with a sheet detailing how much they paid for the outfit to compare the cost of the designer version to that of a DIY outfit.

    Hip-Hop, Rock and Grunge

    • Musical genres often contain their own fashion trends; explore these styles as a fashion theme. Mainstream hip-hop artists, such as Lil Wayne and 50 Cent, are often known for wearing large, ostentatious jewelry. Pop stars like Britney Spears, on the other hand, often wear bright colors and trendy clothing. Alternatively, rock stars wear dark-colored clothing and heavy eye makeup. Grudge artists of the early 1990s, including Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, were known for wearing baggy clothing in plaid patterns; this style could make an interesting fashion theme.
