High School Leadership Scholarships

A high school student who has a history of leadership through student organizations, volunteer work and community service can apply for a scholarship to help with her higher education costs. The award amounts and restrictions for the scholarships vary by organization but are commonly geared toward senior high school students.

  1. Robert Sheppard Leadership Award

    • The Robert Sheppard Leadership Award is a scholarship awarded to eligible members of the National Society of High School Scholars, a student organization open to sophomores, juniors and seniors with an overall GPA of at least 3.5. The student has to show leadership qualities through documented community service and volunteer activities, as supported by a letter of recommendation from the service coordinator. The award amount is $2,500 toward higher education costs at an accredited college or university as of 2011, and applications must be received by the NSHSS by Feb. 21 each year.

    Leadership Scholarship Program

    • The Leadership Scholarship Program is offered by the Key Club, a national student leadership organization, in conjunction with Arizona State University. A high school senior who is a member of a Key Club in any state and has an average GPA of 3.2 or more can apply for the scholarship money. The funds must be used for educational expenses at Arizona State University. A student who does not live in Arizona receives a scholarship of $13,000 as of 2011, and the student can renew the scholarship annually for three years after the first award; awards for resident students vary. An interested student must send a completed application and more information, including current transcripts and an essay about leadership, to the undergraduate admission department of Arizona State University.

    The Lowe's Scholarship Program

    • Lowe's, the home-improvement retail chain headquartered in North Carolina, offers a scholarship to high school seniors in the United States. An applying student must have an overall GPA of 3.25 and a solid history of community service and leadership activities. The scholarship amount is $2,500 as of 2011, and the recipient must be enrolled in an undergraduate program full-time. Lowe's employees and relatives are allowed to apply.

    The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship

    • A minority high school senior who has leadership qualities, a history of working in community service and a financial need can apply for a scholarship from the Jackie Robinson Foundation. The awards are up to $7,500 each year for a maximum of four years, and the student must be attending an accredited college or university in the United States to receive the money. A student who wants to apply must complete the online application at the foundation's official website as of 2011.
