Older Mom Support Groups
A support group for new mothers who are older is a helpful community program that enables mothers over the age of 35 to connect with others. Group members learn about nurturing and child development, and have the opportunity to listen to the personal stories of other members in the group, and perhaps share their own. Mothers guide and support each other as they learn about family dynamics and discover how to build and maintain a happy and healthy family. Support groups are lead by counsellors and there is usually no fee to attend. Contacting your nearest community center in your area is a great place to learn more about support groups and what they offer.

Breaking the Age Barrier
-
Support groups for mothers guide women in the areas of healthy living, wellness, and childcare. They also promote the idea that it is not necessarily "better" to give birth to your first child when you are young, contrary to popular belief. These groups teach women that there are advantages as well as disadvantages of giving birth, whether you are young or older. Women need to be aware of the facts and learn new strategies that will encourage them to become the best parent they can be.
Advantages and Disadvantages
-
Waiting to have children later in life has many advantages. When you are older, you may have had a chance to get married or find a life-long partner with whom have been with for many years, and you might have obtained a degree and advanced in your career. Establishing these aspects of your life before you have children will ensure that you are financially secure when your child is born.
There are also some disadvantages for giving birth at a later age. From a medical perspective, there is an increase in your chances of giving birth to a baby with a congenital disease such as Down Syndrome. Speak to your doctor about this issue, as there are tests that can be done to see if you are at risk for any fetal abnormalities. The change in lifestyle when you have a baby can be overwhelming for some women as well. Support groups have greatly enhanced the well-being of many families and have taught women how to manage the obstacles of being an older mom.

Management Skills
-
In a support group, women learn coping strategies and how to have patience with children. The change in lifestyle from having time to yourself to looking after a child who is completely dependent sometimes makes a woman feel isolated from the rest of the world, especially if she is not working and does not having many community connections. Support groups offer other women to talk to who are in the same situation and who may share similar emotions. It is a place to share stories, find balance between personal needs and the needs of your child, and to learn new skills for building healthy relationships.
Community Resources
-
Women usually form friendships with other parents in support groups. The counselor for the group can also share valuable information about other community resources such as diaper services, counseling, and playgroups. If there is no support group in your area for older mothers, why not create your own. Talk with someone at your nearest community center and share your thoughts and ideas. Many mothers will benefit from your initiative in bringing women together to foster strong family connections and new friendships.
