Physical Education Project Adventure Activities

Teachers normally think of physical education classes as work in a gym, on a sports field or in a controlled arena. However, physical education projects do not have to stay within this type of confined environment, as long as they can prompt students to exert themselves physically. Developing physical education adventure activities for your students is a fun alternative to the usual.

  1. Treasure Hunt

    • Treasure hunts are fun for any age, and they are focused on adventure. In physical education, that adventure can involve the students having a map, then running, walking or climbing to follow the map as they work toward finding the treasure. Teachers need to ensure that the treasure hunt activities planned are age-appropriate and that, on the day of the treasure hunt, assistance from parents or teachers is available.

    Hiking

    • Hiking can serve as a cross-curricular activity that can involve both physical education and science. With teacher guidance, students can hike along trails or in parks, or even across campus to explore local wildlife or plants, record what they find and hike back again. The adventure is in uncovering unknown elements of nature and students' exploring the world around them.

    Endurance

    • An endurance race is turned into an adventure when the students experience new things. For younger students, this project in physical education could involve the students working on a pre-determined course with stations at intervals; at each station, for example, students learn a new exercise technique. At each station the students can build on the repetitions of the techniques they use until they complete the endurance course. Five jumping jacks at one station, six sit-ups at another and seven push-ups at still another station demonstrate a slow progression in the repetition of exercises that could be offered.

    Obstacle Course

    • Obstacle courses are paths that have obstacles that the students must overcome to achieve a goal. An obstacle course becomes an adventure when the students in the physical education class work as a team, each member overcoming some part of the course and uncovering a clue to something when he does. The clue could be part of a puzzle that the team must figure out that leads them to a place, a prize or some other reward.
