Agriculture Future of America Scholarships
Agriculture is not limited to growing crops or raising livestock, but encompasses horticulture, nurseries, plant and animal science, the equine industry, and a host of related fields. The non-profit Agriculture Future of America offers four scholarships for students planning a career in agricultural fields. The AFA's mission is to support and encourage young people seeking careers in agriculture. Those receiving the AFA scholarships may also qualify for leadership training and other career development programs.

AFA Community Scholarships

AFA partners with various community organizations in farming and rural areas to assist local high-school seniors preparing to study agriculture at institutions of higher learning. Eligible communities and regions vary from year to year. For 2011, AFA is partnering with school districts, local chambers of fommerce and organizations such as Future Farmers of America to offer scholarship opportunities in Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Minnesota.
AFA Leader and Academic Scholarship

The AFA Leader and Academic Scholarship focuses on the future leaders of the agricultural industry. Students meeting criteria throughout the country may apply. Recipients also receive funding to attend the national AFA Leaders Conference. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and a history of community involvement and volunteer activities. Financial need is also considered. Award amounts vary.

National Association of Farm Broadcasting Foundation

The NAFB offers scholarships to students seeking careers in agricultural communications. For 2011, three scholarships are available, one for $5,000 and two for $4,000. Recipients also receive a trip to the annual NAFB convention with all expenses paid. Applicants must be in the junior or senior year of college or enrolled in graduate school, concentrating in agricultural communications media. Scholarship candidates must submit three letters of reference, official academic transcripts, and a recorded statement of less than two minutes explaining career goals and choice of an agricultural communications career.
William J. Collins Scholarship

Named for a retired executive of AgriBank, this scholarship is awarded to children of AgriBank employees. Children of those sitting on the AgriBank Board of Directors are ineligible. Applicants must be high school seniors intending to major in a four-year agriculturally-related program in college. To be considered, applicants must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and provide three letters of reference with the application, along with a "personal vision" essay. The William J. Collins Scholarship may be used for fees and tuition, not room and board.
