A piping hot cup of coffee helps start the day off right.

People with coffee makers are quite aware of the foul taste that affects their morning cup if the coffee pot is not cleaned properly. It is important to clean the glass pot and internal components of your coffee maker on a regular basis to ensure a pleasant taste. The frequency of cleaning the pot depends on how often you use it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Reason for Cleaning

    • Oil is present naturally in coffee beans. Other oils are added by coffee manufacturers during the roasting process. The oils leave a residue in the coffee filter and over time the oil turns rancid, thus giving your coffee a bitter or offensive flavor.

    Cleaning the Pot

    • Coffee stains pots over time if daily cleaning is not performed properly. Remove the stains by allowing the pot to cool to room temperature. Rinse any remaining coffee from the glass pot. Add 1 cup of crushed ice to the glass pot. Pour in 4 tsp. of regular table salt and 1 tsp. of water. Swirl the coffee pot until the mild abrasion from the salt and ice cleans away any stains. Rinse the pot well before using again.

    Cleaning Internal Components

    • Cleaning the internal components of the coffee maker is just as important as cleaning the glass pot. Wash the removable parts of your coffee maker, such as the filter, lid and pot in warm, soapy water. Use a soft, nylon scrubbing brush to remove any oily residue. Rinse the parts well and put them back on your coffee maker. Fill the glass pot with 6 cups of water and 2 cups of white distilled vinegar. Pour the mixture into the reservoir where you normally pour the water. Turn your coffee maker on and run it through a complete cycle. Pour the mixture out once the cycle is complete and then repeat the cycle once the pot is cool. Repeat this method twice more but only use clean water the third and fourth times. Allow the coffee pot to cool to room temperature and then rinse it thoroughly. This method dissolves any oily residue inside the coffee maker.

    Daily Cleaning

    • Wash your coffee pot every time you use it to avoid buildup of the oily residue. Allow the glass pot to cool to room temperature and hand wash it in a sink with warm, soapy water. Rinse the pot well and dry it. You can also use an automatic dishwasher to clean your coffee pot. Many models allow you to snap off the lid to wash it.
