Computer Consultant Training

A computer consultant provides expert knowledge to clients on a contract basis. The consultant is a self-employed computer expert who provides services to businesses who have a computer system without the IT staff to support it. A successful computer consultant has training and education in information technology, computer science and programming.

Degree Program

A four-year degree is necessary for a career as a computer consultant. The degree program must be in information technology, computer science or management information systems. A bachelor's degree for a computer consultant will include coursework in programming, engineering, mathematics and computer science. Students may also study business courses such as marketing, finance and accounting. Business courses benefit self-employed consultants. A consultant with on-the-job computer experience may find success with an associate's degree program.

Experience

Consultants gain practical experience on the job in the information technology department of a business. On-the-job training provides the computer expert with troubleshooting skills and the ability to work with individuals who need computer assistance. A computer consultant may work at a company before working as a self-employed consultant. Gaining experience in the field also enhances the consultant's expertise.

Certification

Professional certifications may not be necessary to work as a computer consultant, but it adds to your credibility and expertise. Software and hardware companies offer professional certification specific to computer products. You may broaden your expertise with multiple certifications, which can increase business. For example, the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist and the Microsoft Certified IT Professional certifications demonstrate skill and knowledge in the information technology field.

Continuing Education

Computer consultants must continue to pursue education and certifications to maintain expertise in the field. The computer field changes rapidly, which requires the consultant to seek additional education constantly. Computer consultants with certification can seek to upgrade to advanced credentials through certification programs. Certifications may also require the candidate to recertify periodically through additional examinations. Consultants can pursue additional education through workshops, seminars and courses through the continuing education department of colleges and universities.

Job Skills

In addition to computer skills, the consultant must have written and verbal communication skills so she can explain technical information to non-technical clients. The consultant may write user manuals and teach employees how to use a new computer system. A self-employed consultant must be skilled in sales and marketing in order to bring in new clients.
