Give your "WoW" player character a unique name with special characters.

Like many online games, "World of Warcraft" provides users with the option of creating unique names for their characters. For these names, some players wish to use special characters, such as an accented "e" or a checkmark. To accomplish this, Blizzard allows users to add ASCII characters to names.

  1. Creating a Player Character

    • Launch "WoW" by double clicking on the icon. Enter your name and password to log into your account. Select the menu that reads "Create a New Character" (typically, you cannot change the name of an existing character or add new special characters to his name).

    Adding ASCII Characters

    • Place your mouse in the text field next to "Name." Type the normal characters in the name, such as numbers and letters. Then enter the ASCII code you wish to enter by pressing and holding the "Alt" key and typing the code. For example, 240 becomes "=" and 179 becomes "|." The codes range from 128 to 255. See the Resources section for a link to an ASCII table.

    Name Tips

    • In general, players look down on those who use too many characters or add a long string of numbers to their name, such as "WowisCool1234567." These names are considered to be unoriginal and are annoying to view. In addition, players must type your exact name in order to invite you to play with them. Having a hard-to-remember name or a name with numerous characters makes it difficult for players to invite you (most people do not remember the method for creating ASCII characters offhand).

    Official Name Policy

    • Blizzard's official name policy states that users may not have names that are inappropriate due to racism, sexuality, suggestions of violence or general obscenity. Names cannot defame or harass others and cannot consist of advertising or trademarks. Names must make coherent sense and cannot be "pure gibberish," such as an assortment of five random ASCII characters. Users who violate the policy are assigned random names and may be subject to suspensions or bans.
