Crafts to Make With Greeting Cards

If your attempts to de-clutter your home have uncovered stacks of greeting cards, don't just toss them in the trash. It's easy to recycle old greeting cards with an array of crafts that can occupy children or even make a great gift. Thanks to these creative crafts, you can reuse cards that would have otherwise gone to a landfill.

  1. Scrapbooking

    • Whether you're an avid scrapbooker or would like to get your children started on scrapbooks of their own, the images and words from greeting cards make excellent decorative elements for a scrapbook. Supervise young children while they cut, and allow older children free rein. Purchase inexpensive scrapbooks, or use a three-ring binder and heavy paper and/or page protectors.

    Brand-New Greeting Cards

    • A wonderful craft for the holidays is to create brand-new greeting cards from the old cards you've received in years past. All you need are your old greeting cards, scissors, glue or glue dots, card stock, markers and any other crafty bits and pieces you desire, such as ribbon, glitter or stickers. Cut pictures and words from the old greeting cards, and glue them on to card stock folded in the shape of a greeting card. Embellish with markers, stickers, ribbon or glue --- whatever you like.

    Collages

    • If you have a lot of greeting cards, and a lot of kids to entertain, create collages using images and words from the greeting cards. Use small poster boards or card stock for the background, and provide scissors and plenty of glue and or glue dots. Markers and stickers can help the kids personalize the collages even more.

    Books or Journals

    • Older children --- and some adults --- will enjoy using recycled greeting cards to create books or journals. Using card stock or thin cardboard the same size as your greeting card, create a front and back for your book or journal. Fold or cut paper to the size of the front and back, and use a hole punch to punch holes in both the paper and the front and back. Use brads to hold the book together, or "bind" it using raffia or yarn. Leave it as it is for a journal, or create a storybook by cutting and pasting images and words from greeting cards inside.

    Bookmarks or Postcards

    • An easy way to recycle old greeting cards is by creating bookmarks or postcards. All you need for a postcard is a pair of scissors. Simply cut the card at the fold, and use the front for a whimsical postcard. For bookmarks, cut a long, thin image from the greeting card, add a ribbon or piece of thread to the top and you're done.
