Things to Make Using Hankies

A hanky has more uses than just wiping noses. There are many crafts and projects using new or old hankies. Choose a craft based on the appearance of your hanky, the age of your hanky and your sewing skills or project needs. Hanky crafts are simple projects, and can also be used for gifts or to sell.

  1. Decorative Pillow

    • Purchase a sofa pillow in a square shape about 1 or 2 inches larger than the hanky on all sides. Choose a pillow with plain fabric and no embellishments. Center the hanky over the pillow and pin it in place so that it does not shift. Hand sew the hanky to the front of the pillow. Use a thread that blends in with the color of the hanky. Use small stitches to hide the seam between the hanky and the pillow.

    Quilt

    • Sew a collection of hankies together in a patchwork quilt pattern. Add in fabric squares of the same size to add variety and to make the quilt bigger. Place the quilt top over some quilting batting and over a solid sheet of fabric the same size as the quilt top. Sew the quilt pieces together to finish the quilt. Sew a quilted pattern over the quilt top to keep the batting in place.

    Mouse

    • Fold the hanky in half diagonally to make a triangle. Fold the two outer edges into the middle to make an envelope shape. Roll the hanky from the bottom up, leaving about 2 inches of triangle at the top. Fold the ends of the roll inward. Tuck one side of the roll into the other. Wrap the loose ends of the hanky around the roll to create a tube. Pull out the two loose ends of the hanky from the tube. Tie a knot in one side to make a head. Leave the other loose for a tail.

    Rabbit

    • Place a handful of cotton balls in the middle of a hanky. Fold the hanky in half diagonally to make a triangle shape. Roll the bottom edge up tightly toward the middle of the hanky to make a tube. Fold the hanky in half. Tie a ribbon half way down the fold. Pull the two loose ends of the hanky up to the ribbon. Tie the ribbon around the loose ends of fabric. Pull up the fabric ends to make ears. Pin a cotton ball to the other end of the hanky to make a rabbit tail. Draw or glue on eyes and a face, if desired.
