Dentures need to be cleaned in order for them to remain odor free and hygienic. It can also help maintain your dentures long-term. There are products specifically designed to clean dentures, but in a pinch there are other household items you can use instead. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. White Vinegar

    • White vinegar whitens and disinfects dentures. Fill a drinking glass halfway with distilled white vinegar. Put your dentures in the glass and allow them to soak for 15 to 30 minutes. Brush the dentures with a soft bristle toothbrush and rinse clean under a steady stream of cool water.

    Dish Detergent

    • A mild dish detergent can be used to soak dentures clean overnight. Add two drops of dish detergent to a glass of warm water. Mix the water and soap together and drop your dentures in the glass. Use a toothbrush to scrub loose any tarter and debris. Remove your dentures when you are ready to wear them. Rinse them thoroughly under a stream of cold water.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda helps neutralize odors and acts as a nonabrasive cleanser. You can sprinkle a moist, soft bristle toothbrush with baking soda and gently brush the surface of your dentures. You can also soak your dentures in 1 cup water and 2 tsp. of baking soda. After cleaning with baking soda rinse your dentures well under a stream of cold water.

    Bleach

    • Bleach can be used to whiten dentures when they become discolored by tea, coffee, nicotine, medication and food. Add 1 tsp. of bleach to an 8 oz glass of water. Let you dentures soak in this solution for 15 minutes. Remove the dentures from the bleach solution and rinse thoroughly in cold water. Do not use this method frequently or you may damage your dentures.
