At high levels hydrogen sulfide can be fatal.

Hydrogen sulfide is often referred to as "sewer gas" because it is often a product of breaking down waste. When it is at a low level it smells like rotten eggs, but at the low level it is not necessarily a health risk. When it is at a higher level and at its most dangerous it may not produce an odor. At high concentrations it can be fatal.

  1. Around Your Home and Neighborhood

    • Hydrogen sulfide can be released into your home because of bad plumbing. If your home has sewer drains with dry traps it is at risk for a hydrogen sulfide problem. Living on or close to a farm or near a sewer plant could expose you to the gas. It can also be found in some ground water.

    Industry Buildings

    • Electric power plants, gas extraction operations, paper mills, asphalt plants and waste landfills are just a few places that produce hydrogen sulfide at high levels. It can also be a product of car exhaust.

    Natural Sources

    • Other sources of hydrogen sulfide include breweries, natural gas wells and sulfur springs.

    Consumer Products

    • There is no known consumer products that have any hydrogen sulfide.
