Jobs that Allow Parents to Spend Time with Their Children
For many parents, working is not a choice but instead a necessity. This does not, however, mean they can't dedicate themselves to parenting their children. There are many jobs that parents can hold while still having time for their growing tots.
-
Teaching
-
Teaching is an ideal job for parents who seek an occupation with a schedule that fits with their children's schedule. As a teacher, parents often have similar breaks as their children and have the opportunity to enjoy summers off with their kiddos. Although many teachers take their work home with them, they can do this at-home work once their children have gone to bed or while watching on the sidelines as their kids engage in sporting activities.
Sales Jobs
-
Depending on the type of sales in which individuals work, this job can be conducive to spending time with children. Sales people who travel from business to business, such as medical sales representatives, often have great schedule flexibility, allowing them to arrange their appointments around seeing their children.
-
Virtual Assistant
-
Many business people have traded the standard secretary for a virtual assistant. As virtual assistants, parents can take care of an employer's needs, often from home. Many virtual assistants complete computer tasks remotely, such as transcribing tapes or composing letters or emails. Because many people in this profession can work from home, this job is ideal for someone who wants to work but also wants to be there for her children.
Independent Contractor
-
As an independent contractor, individuals can be their own own bosses, allowing for changes in the schedule without having to answer to anyone. Regardless of skill set, parents can likely complete some jobs as an independent contractor. For example, a skilled writer can work on a freelance basis instead of full time at a magazine or newspaper. Similarly, a handy man can work as a for-hire handy man independently instead of working under a company. While independent contract work is not without its risks, it can be a lucrative and flexible option for parents.
Night Shift Factory Worker
-
Some parents make the difficult choice of working during night hours to be there for their children during the day. When children are young and not yet in school, parents may find that by working as a night shift factory worker, they can spend at least part of their days with their children. Often, once students head to school, this arrangement is not as desirable, as night shift workers may end up leaving home shortly after their children arrive home from school, leaving little time for togetherness.
