At times, being a single parent can be demanding and frustrating.

The opportunity to bring a child into the world and watch him or her grow and mature is a precious journey. But sometimes parents are not able to stay together and raise their child or children jointly, as a family. When parents are unable to resolve their problems, it often results in one parent taking on the parenting role and responsibility that would otherwise be shared between both parents. Single parents deal with serious dilemmas on a daily basis in order to provide for themselves and their children.

  1. Financial Challenges

    • One of the most significant challenges that single parents are faced with is the struggle to make ends meet financially. Families with two parents are likely to rely on two incomes, which enable them to work together to adequately support the family financially. Most times, single parents must provide for their children depending upon one income, which is doable but can be very challenging for the average single parent.

    Sole Responsibility

    • The responsibility that comes along with being solely responsible for the upbringing of a child is another major challenge encountered by single parents. Going through the ups and downs of parenting alone means that a single parent must individually take on all child-related responsibilities, including helping with educational activities on a daily basis, showing interest and supporting a child in extracurricular activities and occasional general and medical errands.

    Dating Issues

    • For most single parents, personal time and dating are not always easy to come by or keep up with. Single parents lives often revolve around work and spending time with their children, which results in minimal time for social outings. Single parents have difficulty when it comes to finding the time to meet new people and date. If a single parent is able to date, deciding on when and how to introduce a new mate to their child is also a common challenge. Dating-related issues for single parents can be reduced by trusting their instincts and keeping an open mind.

    Relations With the Other Parent

    • A single parent who has gone through a hostile divorce or breakup might be forced to develop pleasant relations with the other parent, whether they like it or not. Even if a single parent finds it hard to get along with the child's other parent, regular communication must be maintained for the sake of the child. This can definitely be a difficult and stressful ongoing situation to manage. Although it can be challenging, single parents sometimes have to deal with agreeing upon visitation and joint custody agreements.
