Reasons to Be the School Mascot
A school mascot is a representation of a person, animal or object that excites the crowd at school events. The lucky student who becomes school mascot is tasked with wearing a costume and raising school spirit. Being the school mascot has its own challenges, the most evident of which is the time commitment: Mascots must rehearse often to get routines just right. Nonetheless, being a school mascot also has a number of advantages.
-
Refine Your Athletic Skills and Stay in Shape
-
Being a school mascot is a great way to practice your athletic skills and get some physical activity. Mascots often have to jump up and down, run around and do flips and cartwheels for long periods of time. If you find your life lacking in exercise, rehearsals and performances will get your heart rate going and keep you in good health.
Make Your School Better
-
Anyone who has attended high school knows that a school with spirit is a much better place to be. As the person responsible for school spirit, you might get the chance to improve the atmosphere for yourself and everybody else. Think of this as an exciting challenge. See if you can raise attendance levels at pep rallies and sporting events just with your animated and exciting mascot activities.
-
The Social Aspect
-
If you have no other extracurricular activities on the go, being the school mascot might give you a social community to be a part of. You could make friends with other spirit leaders, with athletes and with regular participants in school activities. In addition, getting to know athletes and cheerleaders could open up social connections that you did not have access to before.
Alternative to Participating in Sports
-
Some people become the school mascot because they would like to play on a sports team but are not good enough. At the high school level, it can be difficult to make the cut on sports teams. Being the mascot is the next best thing. You get to have the crowd cheer you on as you run all over the football field. Besides, getting to know the coaches and players might give you an advantage at the next year's tryouts.
